Hannah Appel is Associate Professor of Anthropology at UCLA and a co-founder of the Debt Collective, the United States' first debtors' union. She co-authored Can't Pay, Won't Pay: The Case for Economic Disobedience and Debt Abolition (Haymarket, 2020); the Collective has won more than $2 billion in debt cancellation for former for-profit-college students.
